# Tier 3 Case Studies — Index

Per `html_dossier_plan.md` §13.3 (Tier 3) and §6 Stage 6, the Formula Dossier ships six case studies — three Greek, three Latin — each a standalone deep-dive HTML for one inscription. They follow a common eight-section structure documented in `TEMPLATE.html`. They open from the main dossier's launcher row and link back via hash-routed cross-references (per the v4 URL-hash bookmarking).

The case studies are the dossier's most reader-facing artefact: where the main app is an analytic instrument, the case studies are the *interpretive prose* that grounds the analytics in real philological argument. They are designed to be readable end-to-end as a standalone document, independent of whether the reader has the rest of the dossier in front of them.

Plus two optional / second-tier candidates flagged in `html_dossier_plan.md` §13.3:
- The Tabula Siarensis (19 CE, Latin) — could replace one of the planned six if a richer Tiberian SC is wanted
- The Oropos Amphiareion donation decree (`iphi:180485`) — directly tied to the user's own working paper

## What each case study contains

Eight sections per the template:

1. **The stone, the moment, the genre.** Metadata card + framing paragraph naming why this inscription is canonical.
2. **The full text, with formula highlights.** Raw text with `<mark>` overlays for each detected formula instance, colour-coded by slot type (prescript / transition / approval / publication).
3. **Slot-by-slot decomposition.** Tabular mapping of every surface segment to its slot label and formula UID — using Sherk 1970's four-part Republican scheme for Latin SCs, Henry 1977's seven-slot Lykourgan template for Athenian decrees.
4. **English translation.** Accessible prose translation of the formal text. Chinese translation as `<span data-zh>` overlay when authored.
5. **Historical context.** 1–3 paragraphs covering literary sources, political/social occasion, the inscription's circulation and survival.
6. **Scholarship synthesis.** 3–5 sub-headings, each anchoring one key scholar's contribution (verbatim blockquote + contextual paragraph). Source quotes from `dossier_workspace/excerpts_*.md`.
7. **Cross-references.** Anchored links into the main dossier (using v4 hash routes — `#tab=formulae&formula=F.XXX`, `#tab=browse&institution=YYY`, etc.) + pointers to adjacent inscriptions outside the dossier + standard reference works.
8. **Bibliography.** Numbered reference list, ~5–10 items, prioritising works in the dossier's `general knowledge` folder so the reader can pull them directly.

A finished case study lands at ~30–50 KB of HTML, takes roughly one focused session of authoring per inscription, and once written is essentially static — it doesn't need to be regenerated when the corpus pipeline reruns (only the cross-reference hash URLs need to stay aligned).

## Authoring tips

- **The text is the centerpiece.** Pull the raw text from `inscriptions_full.jsonl`. Wrap every formula instance you can identify with `<mark>` — use the formula bank's slot taxonomy (`F.LAT_SENATUM_CONSOLUERUNT`, etc.) as tooltip values via the `title=` attribute.
- **The slot table is the analytic spine.** Use it to make explicit what the prose narration sometimes glosses over: that this inscription has *exactly* the slots it has, no more and no fewer, and that the genre's grammar is therefore exactly inspectable. Sherk 1970's typology IS the SC genre's grammar; Henry 1977's IS the Athenian decree's; the table is where the case study earns its right to call itself a *philological* document and not just a translation with notes.
- **Scholarship excerpts go in §6 verbatim**, not paraphrased. Pull from the three `dossier_workspace/excerpts_*.md` files; if no excerpt covers a needed point, write a new one (and back-populate the excerpts file for consistency).
- **Cross-references use the v4 hash routes** (`../dossier.html#tab=...&...`). This means clicking a cross-ref opens the main dossier already filtered to the relevant scope — the case study and the main app become a single navigation surface.
- **Bibliography prioritises items in the `general knowledge` folder** so the reader (often a student or a colleague) can pull the cited works directly from the file tree. Footnote items outside the corpus only when needed.

The dossier's two structural axes are now fully instantiated:
- The **Republican → Tiberian → Antonine SC ladder** across 324 years (cases #1, #2, #3).
- The **Latin ↔ Greek bilingual cross-influence pair** (cases #4, #5).

And alongside them, the new **third axis** is laid down by case #6 — the **Athenian boule + demos formula bundle stable across a sequence of three decrees from a single sanctuary spanning ~20 years**. This is the Greek-civic counterpart to the Roman SC line. Where cases 1+2+3 show formula stability across centuries by a single body issuing widely-spaced decrees, case #6 shows formula stability across closely-spaced decrees by the same body for the same institutional context — a different kind of stability proof, equally important for the dossier's central thesis that formulaicity is the genre's grammar.

## Launcher row in `dossier.html`

A new "Case studies" row in the main dossier's header offers direct entry to each case study. It is added in the bundle script (`pipeline/40_bundle_html.py`) and appears just below the existing Restoration-workbench launcher. As new case studies ship, append the link to the row.

## Cross-influence within the case-study set

The six case studies are not independent — they constitute a curated network within the dossier's wider Cross-influence dimension:

- Cases 1, 2, 3 trace the **Republican → Tiberian → Antonine** SC line, showing the 350-year formula-stability claim made by Lebek 1999 and reinforced in Workbench Exercise 6.
- Cases 4, 5 are the **bilingual** SCs — one (Asclepiade) preserved on a single stone with both faces; the other (Plarasensibus) preserved as separate Latin and Greek copies. They are the dossier's most direct evidence for the §5 Cross-influence network's calque-edge claims.
- Case 6 (Asklepieion dossier) is the **Greek-civic counterpart** to the Roman SC line — a multi-decree dossier from a single Athenian sanctuary spanning ~30 years, showing how the Athenian *boule + demos* formula bundle stays stable across decree iterations.

The case-study reader can therefore move horizontally (across Republican / Tiberian / Antonine SCs) or vertically (across Greek civic decree vs Roman SC vs Roman provincial-application) and see the dossier's central thesis — formulaicity as the genre's grammar — instantiated in concrete texts at each crossing.
