Antiochus III the Great recognizes the great festival of Artemis Leucophryene, the foundress-goddess of Magnesia ad Maeandrum. The Magnesian sacred-envoys (theoroi) Demophon, Philiscus and Pheres reached the king at Antioch-in-Persis — far to the east, during his anabasis to the upper satrapies — to proclaim the games and deliver the city's decree, asking him to recognize the festival as 'crowned' (stephanitic) and of Pythian rank (isopythian), held every four years. The king replies that, having always had the kindliest feeling for the Magnesians on account of their goodwill, he accepts the honours voted to the goddess, will help to increase them, and has written to his own officials so that the cities under him will likewise give their recognition. This is Antiochus III's contribution to the famous c.208 BCE panhellenic recognition-drive whose replies cover the dossier-walls of Magnesia; it is a distinct document from the Magnesian replies of Antiochus the son, Ptolemy IV and Attalus I (RC 32-34).
