# Renewed road–record search and audit

17 October 2026. This repeat search adds **five individually identified object dossiers**: three rock-cut roadworks inscriptions in the parallel **R1** class, one milestone with a physical road association (**T2b**) and one milestone with unresolved primary provenance (**T3**). It establishes **no additional T1 milestone or T2a primary installation**. Existing Donnas, Smith’s Shield, FS12, Čatež and Casa de Campo contexts were rechecked, without tier reversals.

The current atlas contains **47 reviewed object dossiers, 56 inscription phases, 92 object-history events, 131 typed location assertions (76 mapped), 573 ledger entries and 12 selected CIL page images**. Forty-four dossiers concern milestones or retained milestone comparators; three concern roadworks inscriptions. These figures do not mean that every object has a verified original coordinate or contemporary pavement.

## Additions

| Object | Admission and reason | Geometry and remaining limit |
|---|---|---|
| Sarıkaya, CIL III346 | R1: direct CIL rock-cut passage description and bilingual restoration text;58–59CE envelope | Original panel unlocated; historical support report distinct from qualified later destruction report. Wrong EDCS homonym quarantined. |
| Kuşkayası southern bilingual panel, CIL III6983 | R1: published original rock support and physical road with a roadmaking text;45–54CE | Separate T5 monument-complex locator,400m editorial envelope. Upper niche text and phase sequence remain distinct. |
| Tabula Traiana, CIL III1699/8267 | R1: direct CIL collation and primary conservation photograph establish the original cliff–road pair;100CE | Original point null; separate T4 raised-display locator,200m envelope. Actual lift autumn1969, with part of the road. |
| El-Qusayyibe East, IMC293 | T2b: full survey article labels this stone against the physical road | Original socket unproved; inscription date unknown. Separate T5 station-area locator,100m envelope. |
| Cyrene C.537 | T3: full corpus text and road attribution, with re-erection history | No original coordinate. Chronological discrepancy44–47 versus heading45–46CE retained. Full platform-discovery chain still needed. |

R1 is a separate record kind, not a relaxed definition of T1. Original rock support may be historically documented even when later detached or destroyed. Strong original context does not transfer to the coordinate of a moved block, broad site or repository. The rupestral support filter includes both the milestone and roadworks forms; their tier and record-kind badges remain distinct.

## Audit corrections

- **Smith’s Shield:** retain T2a for the documented base. NHLE expressly says the local Stanegate form had not been archaeologically examined. The atlas now distinguishes the publication-identified corridor from an excavated pavement or dated construction layer; the qualification has its own ledger assertion.
- **Sarıkaya:** raw EDCS-26600085 coordinates35.376710E,39.495338N refer to an incompatible central-Anatolian homonym, whereas CIL places the inscription above Lake İznik. The raw record remains intact; this point is withheld globally from display and distance tests. Six imported coordinate conflicts or superseded proxies are now quarantined.
- **Aquila’s name:** the full name at Sarıkaya is reconstructed across complementary Latin and Greek witnesses, not wholly preserved in one version.
- **Tabula Traiana:** current display does not preserve its ancient elevation. The primary conservation report dates the actual relocation, separately from preparation years or reservoir construction.

## Search coverage and negative results

The source ledger records query batches, inspected pages and access limits for the western Mediterranean, Bithynia/Paphlagonia, the Danube, Cyrenaica and the Levant. This is a bounded search, not a corpus census. Sources include directly inspected local CIL pages, full university-hosted field studies, official excavation and heritage records, corpus editions, local EpiDoc files, and expressly qualified index or abstract leads.

High-priority unresolved candidates include La Turbie606, Alba Fucens LXVIII, Bet Neṭofa/Eshkol and Gospodjin Vir. Missing full discovery reports, unverified shaft-to-base joins, secondary reuse and conflicting source statements prevent stronger admission. RIB2221 is a negative control: an institution field saying in situ must be read alongside a narrative discussing possible transport. These are research outcomes, not omissions to conceal.

No Itiner-e geometry was altered, and no new point was snapped to a road. A bounded metadata review inspected local Itiner-e records8503/24152/24155 near Kuşkayası,22977/23197 in the Tabula display neighbourhood and22051 near El-Qusayyibe. Source bibliographies and contributors are preserved in `alignment-source-triage.json` and three ledger assertions. The2024 Golan study refers to the2020 work for different milestones, so overlapping authorship is not proof that IMC293 built the route geometry. These checks leave underlying-source collation outstanding; none demonstrates independent corroboration. A rectangular search can also retrieve another-bank route and cannot assign an inscription to a road. The new station and display circles are editorial search envelopes, not statistical confidence intervals or guaranteed error bounds.

The atlas Sources & method view presents the additions and search results; Object, Timeline, Locations and Sources remain readable directly through its map inspector. `data/renewed-review.json` exposes the search ledger. Modern PDFs and figures are retained for local research or linked, without redistribution in the atlas package. The added CIL page is public domain.

## Verification

The release passes87 data/source checks and118 browser checks across general atlas behavior, primary contexts, positional uncertainty and renewed records. A second automated source review checked the three R1 admissions; root also inspected the labelled IMC293 photograph and full live C.537 corpus. This is bounded documentary and software QA, not field validation or independent human archaeological certification. ZIP payload hashes are verified during packaging.
