# Three original settings: map admission and uncertainty

Research edition, 17 October 2026. This pass locates Smith’s Shield, Taucheira FS12 and Čatež through published archaeological records, survey cartography and historical topography. It does not claim new field measurements. Original settings, detached fragments, museum institutions and replicas remain separate assertions.

| Case | Admitted map representation | Editorial radius | Context and map scope |
|---|---|---:|---|
| Smith’s Shield, RIB 2308 | Official object-level HER British National Grid point, converted to WGS84 | 60 m | T2a primary base; object-specific locator, with disagreement among historical grid references |
| Taucheira FS12 | Original-station vicinity derived from the published regional survey figure | 1,000 m | T2a primary socket context; T5 approximate area locator |
| Čatež ob Savi | Original-setting search area bounded by the highway-cutting description and published archaeological survey anchor | 600 m | T2a ancient seating context; T5 area locator, not a measured seating point |

Dashed areas are editorial search envelopes. They are neither source-reported field errors nor statistical confidence intervals or guaranteed containment bounds. Decimal output used in reproducing a transformation must not be read as archaeological positional precision. No Itiner-e line, road snapping, nearest-road selection or catalogue milestone point was used to produce these three centres. All remain excluded from numerical point-to-road distance tests.

## Smith’s Shield

The [official HER N6577](https://keystothepast.info/search-records/results-of-search/results-of-search-2/site-details/?PRN=N6577) identifies the western milestone, transcribes historical OS and Sedgley grid references and links to the county GIS. This is distinct from N6576, the eastern Codley Gate marker. An object-level point is available; the original OS sheet, RCHME survey plan and field notebooks were not directly inspected in this pass. Their lineage is reported through the current official HER.

[RIB 2308](https://romaninscriptionsofbritain.org/inscriptions/2308) distinguishes the surviving original base from the upper shaft moved to a gateway around 1815. Later HER evidence reports the north gatepost lost and another piece observed historically. No defensible gateway coordinate was recovered: the detached pieces remain unmapped, with the historical relative locations retained.

## Taucheira FS12

The [2016 field report](https://doi.org/10.19272/201610601002), pp. 24–26, fig. 1 and fig. 3, documents the original socket, fallen adjacent shaft and local road. A two-control similarity transform provides a regional locator from fig. 1. City-symbol matching, city-locator choice and map generalisation dominate the uncertainty. The source scale bar and north arrow provide internal checks; two fitted controls do not provide an independent accuracy test. Substituting the other published Taucheira gazetteer point moves the result about 456 m.

The original 2009 GPS measurements were not obtained. The inscription remains undated. Recommended museum transfer does not establish a completed move or current custody. The later 2023 publication’s dependent reference is not counted as an independent milestone observation.

See [the figure controls, sensitivity and source audit](site-position-fs12.md) and [structured derivation](site-position-fs12.json).

## Čatež ob Savi

[Petru’s discovery report](https://ojs.zrc-sazu.si/av/article/view/10041), pp. 27–29, gives the ancient seating in the modern highway-cut exposure and physical Roman-road relation. The published cross-section is not a georeferenceable site plan. Later official archaeological mapping and a survey anchor constrain a search area; they do not survey the 1958/1959 seating itself. The contradictory discovery years remain source alternatives, separate from the inscription’s qualified 139–141 CE dating.

Museum coordinates locate the institution, not its storage or display room and not the original station. A modern roadside replica is a separate later context. The wrong imported Čatež homonym near Trebnje remains quarantined.

See [the plans, survey anchor, later locations and limits](site-position-catez.md) and [structured derivation](site-position-catez.json).

## Atlas and exports

Click a typed pin or dashed envelope to open the object in the map inspector. Position scope is visible immediately; Locations provides the full method and linked sources. Locate actions fit the area of uncertainty. T2a filters select the objects, while each pin retains its own effective location tier. Repository proxies remain T6.

`data/site-positions.json` preserves source records and coordinate derivations. `data/site-positions.geojson` exports the reviewed point centres with role, effective tier, method and editorial radius properties. A GeoJSON point is a centre of the stated area, not a claim to exact emplacement. The source publications’ modern figures are linked rather than redistributed. Previously published no-coordinate statements describe earlier releases; the structured position updates and this report supersede them for this edition.
