Hecataeus of Miletus

FGrH 1 F 36b — Herodotos 4.36  Converged + audit-sound
I laugh when I see that many have drawn maps of the earth, none with sense, who draw Ocean flowing round the earth as if it were circular, made by compasses, and make Asia equal to Europe.

Apparatus — BNJ base vs open-corpus witness

Base text after Brill’s New Jacoby / Jacoby (FGrH). The apparatus records differences against the open-corpus witness (Scaife/Perseus) within the overlapping span; encoding and orthography are folded. Collation codepoint-verified and adversarially audited (2026-06-26).

ὁρῶνPerseus/Scaife Hdt. 4.36.2 (urn:cts:greekLit:tlg0016.tlg001.perseus-grc2)word-variantTarget (BNJ/Jacoby) ὁρῶν = ὁ ρ ῶ(U+1FF6) ν (Attic-contracted) vs witness ὁρέων = ὁ ρ έ(U+03AD) ω(U+03C9) ν (Ionic uncontracted). Genuine substantive word-variant: contracted vs uncontracted present participle of ὁράω. Both NFC.
νόον ἐχόντωςPerseus/Scaife Hdt. 4.36.2word-divisionTarget prints two accented words νόον / ἐχόντως (ν ό(U+03CC) ο ν | ἐ(U+1F10, psili) χ ό ν τ ω ς); witness glues them into one unaccented form νοονεχόντως (ν ο ο ν ε χ ό ν τ ω ς). Bare letter-string identical (νοονεχοντως); difference is word-division plus the lost ad-hoc accents on νόον and the psili on ἐ-. BNJ/Jacoby = two words; Perseus = single glued token. Classified word-division (carries an accentuation component).
ἐξηγησάμενον,Perseus/Scaife Hdt. 4.36.2punctuationAfter ἐξηγησάμενον: target comma ',' (U+002C); witness Greek raised dot '·' (U+00B7, ano teleia). Punctuation only.
γῆν,Perseus/Scaife Hdt. 4.36.2punctuationAfter γῆν: target has comma ',' (U+002C) before ἐοῦσαν; witness has no punctuation (space only). Punctuation only.
Witness: Scaife/Perseus. Verdict: CONVERGED (apparatus complete, publishable as BNJ-based).
