Hecataeus of Miletus
FGrH 1 T 11b — Strabo, Geographica 1.1.11 Converged + audit-sound
Let what has been said suffice to show that Homer began geography. Those who succeeded him too are clearly notable men, akin to philosophy; Eratosthenes says the first two after Homer were Anaximander, the acquaintance and fellow citizen of Thales, and Hecataeus of Miletus. The former was the first to publish a geographical map, while Hecataeus left a drawing, believed to be his by inference from the rest of his writing.
Apparatus — BNJ base vs open-corpus witness
Base text after Brill’s New Jacoby / Jacoby (FGrH). The apparatus records differences against the open-corpus witness (Scaife/Perseus) within the overlapping span; encoding and orthography are folded. Collation codepoint-verified and adversarially audited (2026-06-26).
| Lemma / locus | BNJ base | Witness | Type | Note |
| Perseus (tlg0099.tlg001.perseus-grc2:1.1.11) | punctuation | BNJ-based target reads a comma after τε (᾽Αναξίμανδρόν τε,); Perseus omits the comma (Ἀναξίμανδρόν τε Θαλοῦ). Substantive punctuation difference; no change to wording or word-division. |
| Perseus (tlg0099.tlg001.perseus-grc2:1.1.11) | punctuation | BNJ-based target reads a comma after πολίτην (πολίτην, καὶ); Perseus omits the comma (πολίτην καὶ). Substantive punctuation difference; wording identical. |
Witness: Scaife/Perseus. Verdict: CONVERGED (apparatus complete, publishable as BNJ-based).
Open-corpus witness family: urn:cts:greekLit. This is a BNJ/Jacoby-based edition with an open-corpus apparatus, not a verbatim copy of the witness edition. Source data: explorers/_build/editions/ecoed-hecat-fgrh1-t11b.json.
