τὸ μὲν δὴ Σικελικὸν γένος οὕτως ἐξέλιπεν Ἰταλίαν, ὡς μὲν Ἑλλάνικος ὁ Λέσβιός φησι, τρίτηι γενεᾶι πρότερον τῶν Τρωικῶν, Ἀλκυόνης ἱερωμένης ἐν Ἄργει κατὰ τὸ ἕκτον καὶ εἰκοστὸν ἔτος. δύο δὲ ποιεῖ στόλους Ἰταλικοὺς διαβάντας εἰς Σικελίαν· τὸν μὲν πρότερον Ἐλύμων, οὕς φησιν ὑπ’ Οἰνώτρων ἐξαναστῆναι, τὸν δὲ μετὰ τοῦτον ἔτει πέμπτωι γενόμενον Αὐσόνων Ἰάπυγας φευγόντων· βασιλέα δὲ τούτων ἀποφαίνει Σικελόν, ἀφ’ οὗ τοὔνομα τοῖς τε ἀνθρώποις καὶ τῆι νήσωι τεθῆναι.

The Sikel nation thus left Italy — as Hellanikos of Lesbos says, three generations before the Trojan War, in the twenty-sixth year of the priesthood of Alkyone at Argos. He makes two Italian expeditions cross into Sicily: the earlier of the Elymi, whom he says were driven out by the Oinotri; the later, five years after, of the Ausonians fleeing the Iapyges; and he declares their king to have been Sikelos, from whom the name was given to both the people and the island.
