Tabula
Banasitana

The Tabula Banasitana — a bronze tablet from Roman Morocco carrying a complete dossier on a single grant of Roman citizenship to the family of Iulianus, a chief of the Berber Zegrenses, AD 168–177. Five documents copied in sequence: two imperial letters of Marcus Aurelius (with Verus, then Commodus), a certified extract from the imperial register of citizenship grants, the dated register entry, and twelve witnesses of the emperor's council. The fullest surviving record of how Rome enfranchised an individual. Verbatim text, translation, apparatus and a section-by-section commentary.
