A late-Seleucid king Antiochus writes to his official Euphemus, enclosing a memorandum (hypomnematismos) entered in the royal journal: in response to a report of the 'power' (energeia) of the god Zeus of Baetocaece, it has been decided to grant the god, for all time, the Syrian village of Baetocaece — once held by Demetrius son of Demetrius, grandson of Mnasias, in the satrapy of Apamea — with all its lands, boundaries and the year's produce. The revenue is to fund the monthly sacrifices under a priest the god himself appoints; tax-free fairs are to be held on the 15th and 30th of each month; the sanctuary is to be inviolable and the village free from billeting; violators incur the charge of impiety; and copies are to be inscribed on a stele in the sanctuary. The corpus's first Syrian temple-estate charter — a sanctuary-endowment in decree form, preserved because the stone was re-cut in A.D. 253-259 below a Latin rescript of Valerian and Gallienus.
