Ziaelas of Bithynia to Cos: the inviolability of the Asclepieion

King Ziaelas of Bithynia replies to an embassy from Cos: he recognizes the inviolability (asylia) of the sanctuary of Asclepius and undertakes to befriend the city, recalling the goodwill of his father Nicomedes I, the city's long acquaintance with Bithynia, and his own alliance with king Ptolemy (III). He promises to look after the security of Coan and Greek seafarers who put in at Bithynian-controlled ports, and to see that any who suffer mishap at sea are wronged by no one. The only royal letter of a Bithynian king in Welles; part of the Coan asylia dossier (Welles 25–28). c.240 BCE.
