Caesar's ethnography of the Gauls
Hours 14, 15, and 16 gave us two ethnographic surveys of Britain — one by Caesar, two by Tacitus. 第 21 课转向凯撒篇幅最长的 internal ethnography内部民族志: his portrait of:他对 Gallic society itself高卢社会本身, embedded in Book 6 between the punitive campaign of Hour 18 and the final Gallic uprising of Vercingetorix (which we approach starting Hour 22). DBG 6.11–20. It is the second-longest single ethnographic excursus in the whole work (only the German excursus, 6.21–28, is longer). It appears at a moment when Caesar has just finished destroying the Eburones and is about to face the largest pan-Gallic revolt of his career. The ethnography is therefore6.11–20。
Our excerpt focuses on the我们的节选聚焦于 structural classes of Gallic society高卢社会的结构性阶层 (6.13–15). Caesar reports that "in all Gaul there are two classes of men who are of any account and dignity": the(6.13–15)。 Knights (equitēs). The common people, he says, are "almost reckoned in the class of slaves." The Druids are responsible for religious matters, judicial disputes, and the education of young men. They study a tradition that "has been brought from Britain" (6.13).)。 (6.13)。 They commit nothing to writing他们不把任何东西诉诸文字 — yet they spend up to twenty years learning the oral discipline. The Knights are the warriors: they all fight when there is war, and they keep retinues of dependents in proportion to their wealth and birth.—— 但他们要花上多达二十年来学习这套口传的训练。
Hour 21: Ethnography of the Galli — Source: DBG 6.13–15第 21 课:高卢人的民族志 —— 出处:DBG 6.13–15
In all Gaul there are two classes of men who are held in any account and honor; for the common people are almost held in the position of slaves. Of these two classes, one is of the Druids, the other of the Knights. The Druids are involved in matters of religion, they conduct public and private sacrifices, they interpret religious matters: a great number of young men come together to them for the sake of learning. They are in great honor: for they decide on almost all public and private disputes, and, when a crime has been committed, when a murder has occurred, when there is a dispute about boundaries or inheritance, the same Druids decide. The discipline is thought to have been discovered in Britain, and from there transferred into Gaul; they spend nearly twenty years in the discipline. Nor do they think it right to commit these things to writing; but they are accustomed to learn by heart, in verses, a great deal. And over all these Druids there is one chief, who has the highest authority among them. The other class is that of the Knights: these, when there is need and some war arises, all engage in war. And each of them, the more retainers and clients he has, has them around himself: this they recognize as their one form of influence and power. Most of the common people, when they are oppressed either by debt or by the magnitude of taxes or by the injustice of the more powerful, hand themselves over into slavery to the nobles. The Druids are accustomed to be absent from war; and they do not pay tribute together with the rest; they have exemption from military service and immunity from all things. Excited by such great advantages, many come to the discipline of their own accord, and are sent by parents and relatives.

Caesar's ethnographic prose stays mainly in present indicative and a handful of perfect-passive periphrastics. The 12 sentences contain about 37 finite or infinitive verb forms — track them through the passage.
Questions on the Narrative
- Caesar says there are凯撒说有 duo genera... hominum. Why two? Is the plebs not a "class"? Compare with the Roman three-tier scheme.。
- In s. 3, the Druids do three things — sacrifice, interpretation of religion, education of young men. How does this combination compare with the role of Roman priests
- The Druid discipline was "discovered in Britain and transferred to Gaul" (s. 5). What is the implicit cultural argument? Is Britain primitive, or paradoxically more ancient and learned?
- The Druids do not commit anything to writing (s. 6). What does "in verses" tell you about the form of the discipline? Compare to Hellenistic oral epic, Vedic Sanskrit recitation, Tibetan Buddhist memorization.“以诗句的形式”记诵。
- In s. 8, the Knights all engage in war when "there is need" (第 8 句里,骑士在“有需要”时全体参战(cum est ūsus). The 4th-decl. noun第四变格名词 ūsus is doing work here — translate carefully. How does "the need" frame the Knights' relationship to violence?
- The Druids are exempt from military service and tribute (s. 11). Compare with the Roman priesthood and the senatorial class. Is Caesar implicitly recognizing a Gallic aristocracy?
Further Questions — Translation
Translate sentences 1, 5, and 11 into idiomatic English. Pay attention to: - The comparative phrasing in s. 1:把第 1、5、11 句译成地道的英文。请注意: —— 第 1 句中的比较措辞: almost in the position of slaves几乎处于奴隶的地位. How do you render。 - The passive periphrastic in s. 5:? What's the tense? - The triple "and not" structure in s. 11:。 Druidēs ā bellō abesse solent; neque tribūta... pendunt; mīlitiae vacātiōnem... habent.

Discussion讨论
-
Caesar describes the Druids as凯撒把德鲁伊描述为 scholars who do not write不写字的学者. He himself is a Roman senator who writes.。 What does the contrast tell you?
-
The common people are "almost held in the position of slaves" (普通民众“几乎被置于奴隶的地位”(paene). What does the qualifier let Caesar avoid saying?)。

The Druids' twenty-year training. What modern institutions resemble this? What does long apprenticeship tell you about cultural values?

The Druids' exemptions from war and taxes mirror Roman senatorial privileges. Is Caesar quietly suggesting that the Gauls have an elite class that mirrors Rome's own?
