The longest royal letter in the corpus (44 lines): Antiochus III the Great writes to a governor, 12 October 189 BCE, about the chief-priesthood of the great sanctuary-suburb of Daphne near Antioch. He first praises a 'friend' (philos) — once in honour with the king's brother — for his unstinting loyalty and service, having spared 'neither his life nor his property' in the crown's interest. The man, worn down by 'incessant hardships', has asked to retire in good health; the king consents, and — since the chief-priesthood of Apollo and Artemis 'of the Daittai' and the other Daphne sanctuaries 'requires a man who is a friend and able to preside worthily' — appoints him chief-priest of them all. He orders the governor to register the man in the financial records as chief-priest, to honour him fittingly, to have all temple-staff obey him, and to inscribe a copy of the letter on stelae in conspicuous places. Dated Seleucid year 124, Dios 14 — the very year of Magnesia.
