Two letters of Attalus III Philometor, the last king of Pergamon (138-133 BCE), confirming the privileges of two 'Holy Villages' (Hiera Kome) after 138 BCE. In the first (RC 68) the king guarantees the inviolability (asylia) of the temple of the Persian Goddess — Anaitis — in the Lydian Hierakome, on condition that the village's existing custom be unchanged and provided the grant truly descends from former rulers and his own ancestors; with two near-identical decrees in hand from the village's envoys, he has dictated a single order and ordered the names of the co-envoys recorded. In the second (RC 69), more fragmentary, the king writes to a governor about the Carian Hiera Kome of Apollo, confirming what earlier kings had granted, increasing the gods' honours, and giving the inhabitants the tax-exemption they had requested. Together they show the Attalid chancery, at the dynasty's very end, sustaining the temple-grants of its predecessors.
