Edict of M. Petronius Mamertinus
on illegal requisitions

The edict of Marcus Petronius Mamertinus, equestrian prefect of Egypt under Hadrian, issued about AD 133/137 and preserved on papyrus. The prefect states that he has learned of soldiers crossing Egypt without a warrant and seizing boats, pack-animals and porters from the population — some by open force, some by pressing the local strategoi — to the outrage of private persons and the discredit of the army. He forbids the strategoi and royal scribes to furnish anything for transport to anyone without a warrant, and promises vigorous punishment to taker and giver alike. Verbatim Greek text, translation, apparatus and a section-by-section commentary.
