Agatharchides of Cnidus

FGrH 86 (sabaeans) — Agatharchides of Cnidus, On the Erythraean Sea §97 — the Sabaeans and incense coast of Arabia (Photius, Bibliotheca cod. 250; Müller GGM I p.186; FGrH 86)  Converged + audit-sound
Next adjoins the nation of the Sabaeans, the greatest in Arabia and master of every kind of prosperity. For their land bears all the things that with us are produced for living, and the bodies of the inhabitants are more notable. A fragrance pervades the whole coast, producing for those who arrive a delight beyond sight and speech. For by the sea itself grow abundant balsam and cassia ... and inland stretch continuous, great thickets — for there are towering trees of myrrh and of frankincense, and besides of cinnamon, palm, and cane.

Apparatus — BNJ base vs open-corpus witness

Base text after Brill’s New Jacoby / Jacoby (FGrH). The apparatus records differences against the open-corpus witness (Agatharchides, De Mari Erythraeo) within the overlapping span; encoding and orthography are folded. Collation codepoint-verified and adversarially audited (2026-06-26).

Lemma / locusBNJ baseWitnessTypeNote
Ὀσμή τε πᾶσανomission (candidate/BNJ omits a whole sentence the witness retains)VERIFIED REAL. Witness (First1KGreek tlg0067.tlg001, Photius/Müller recension) inserts the sentence 'Βοσκημάτων κεχορήγηνται πλήθεσιν ἀμυθήτοις.' between ἀξιολογώτερα. and Ὀσμή τε. Candidate/BNJ wholly lacks it — confirmed 'βοσκημ' absent from candidate; candidate-after-omission segment fully present in witness. Whole-sentence presence/absence variant inside the overlapping span.
τέρψιν τοῖςτέρψιντοῖς (joined, no space)word-division / token-joinVERIFIED. Witness physically runs 'τέρψιντοῖς' with no inter-word boundary; candidate/BNJ divides 'τέρψιν τοῖς'. No letter differs. Borderline under fold-spacing policy but recorded as a word-division datum because the witness lacks the boundary. Candidate apparatus already flags this as the cleaned word-split.
Witness: Agatharchides, De Mari Erythraeo. Verdict: CONVERGED.
Open-corpus witness family: urn:cts:greekLit. This is a BNJ/Jacoby-based edition with an open-corpus apparatus, not a verbatim copy of the witness edition. Source data: explorers/_build/editions/ecoed-agath-fgrh86-sabaeans.json.
