Eratosthenes of Cyrene

FGrH 241 (sphragides) — Eratosthenes, Geographika — sphragides, first seal = India (Strabo, Geographica 2.1.22)  Converged + audit-sound
He tries to cut each of these in turn into its possible parts, and these he calls sphragides (seals). Indeed, calling India the first seal of the southern part and Ariana the second — both being readily delineable — he was able to assign both a length and a breadth ... for he says India is rhomboid in shape.

Apparatus — BNJ base vs open-corpus witness

Base text after Brill’s New Jacoby / Jacoby (FGrH). The apparatus records differences against the open-corpus witness (Scaife/Perseus) within the overlapping span; encoding and orthography are folded. Collation codepoint-verified and adversarially audited (2026-06-26).

δευτέραν δὲ τὴν Ἀριανήν, ἐχούσας τι εὐπερίγραφον, ἴσχυσεν ἀμφοτέρων ἀποδοῦναι καὶ μῆκος καὶ πλάτοςStrabo 2.1.22 (Scaife/Perseus tlg0099.tlg001.perseus-grc2:2.1.22)abridgementAfter 'τὴν Ἀριανήν' the candidate (BNJ) carries the fuller clause 'ἐχούσας τι εὐπερίγραφον, ἴσχυσεν ἀμφοτέρων ἀποδοῦναι καὶ μῆκος καὶ πλάτος'; the Perseus witness elides exactly this clause inside its internal truncation gap (rendered '...'). NOT a word variant: the witness simply abridges/quotes selectively here. The candidate's words are not contradicted by Perseus, only omitted by it. The shared opening run (168 chars, through 'τὴν Ἀριανήν') is verbatim-identical in NFC.
(candidate begins at πειρᾶται)Strabo 2.1.22 (Scaife/Perseus tlg0099.tlg001.perseus-grc2:2.1.22)omissionThe Perseus witness opens with a leading context clause 'διελὼν τῇ γραμμῇ ταύτῃ τὴν οἰκουμένην δίχα' (preceded by its own '...' truncation) which the candidate omits, beginning the excerpt at 'πειρᾶται'. This is the candidate omitting witness-supplied surrounding context, not a textual divergence within the quoted matter. The shared, overlapping text from 'πειρᾶται' onward is identical.
τὴν μὲν γὰρ Ἰνδικὴν ῥομβοειδῆ φησι.Strabo 2.1.22 (Scaife/Perseus tlg0099.tlg001.perseus-grc2:2.1.22)otherClosing rhomboid clause 'τὴν μὲν γὰρ Ἰνδικὴν ῥομβοειδῆ φησι' is verbatim-identical between candidate and witness in NFC. The only delta is the candidate's terminal full stop vs the witness's trailing '...' truncation marker — purely an excerpt-boundary/punctuation artefact, no substantive variant. Recorded for completeness; carries no editorial weight.
Witness: Scaife/Perseus. Verdict: CONVERGED (apparatus complete, publishable as BNJ-based).
