Hecataeus of Miletus

FGrH 1 T 5 — Herodotus, Histories 5.36.1-4  Converged + audit-sound
Aristagoras deliberated with his fellow conspirators, disclosing his own opinion and the message from Histiaios. (2) All the others gave the same opinion, urging revolt; but Hecataeus the prose writer at first tried to prevent them from taking up war against the king of the Persians, enumerating all the peoples over whom Dareios ruled and his power; and when he did not persuade them, he advised them, as a second-best course, to make themselves masters of the sea.

Apparatus — BNJ base vs open-corpus witness

Base text after Brill’s New Jacoby / Jacoby (FGrH). The apparatus records differences against the open-corpus witness (Scaife/Perseus) within the overlapping span; encoding and orthography are folded. Collation codepoint-verified and adversarially audited (2026-06-26).

Lemma / locusBNJ baseWitnessTypeNote
τωὐτὸ (BNJ) ] τὠυτὸ (Perseus)Perseus (tlg0016.tlg001.perseus-grc2:5.36)word-variantCrasis of τὸ αὐτό. Codepoint-precise: BNJ = τ + ω(U+03C9) + ὐ(U+1F50 upsilon-with-psili) + τ + ὸ → breathing on the UPSILON. Perseus = τ + ὠ(U+1F60 omega-with-psili) + υ(U+03C5 plain) + τ + ὸ → breathing on the OMEGA. Same crasis, different placement of the smooth breathing across the contracted vowels (τωὐτό vs τὠυτό). A genuine editorial/orthographic variant of how the crasis is written, NOT a Unicode-normalisation artefact — hence apparatus, not encoding_diffs.
(Perseus)Perseus (tlg0016.tlg001.perseus-grc2:5.36)punctuationClause boundary before ἐπείτε δὲ οὐκ ἔπειθε. BNJ ends the αὐτοῦ clause with a comma (U+002C), Perseus with a full stop (U+002E). Punctuation-only difference; words identical.
Witness: Scaife/Perseus. Verdict: CONVERGED (apparatus complete, publishable as BNJ-based).
Open-corpus witness family: urn:cts:greekLit. This is a BNJ/Jacoby-based edition with an open-corpus apparatus, not a verbatim copy of the witness edition. Source data: explorers/_build/editions/ecoed-hecat-fgrh1-t5.json.
