Hellanicus of Lesbos

FGrH 4 F 4 — Dionysios Hal., Antiquitates Romanae 1.28  Converged + audit-sound
Hellanikos of Lesbos says the Tyrrhenians, formerly called Pelasgians, took their present name once they settled in Italy. In the Phoronis his account runs: 'From Pelasgos their king and Menippe daughter of Peneios was born Phrastor, then Amyntor, then Teutamides, then Nanas. In whose reign the Pelasgians were driven out by the Greeks, and leaving their ships on the river Spines in the Ionian gulf they took the inland city Croton, and setting out thence founded what is now called Tyrrhenia.'

Apparatus — BNJ base vs open-corpus witness

Base text after Brill’s New Jacoby / Jacoby (FGrH). The apparatus records differences against the open-corpus witness (Scaife/Perseus) within the overlapping span; encoding and orthography are folded. Collation codepoint-verified and adversarially audited (2026-06-26).

Lemma / locusBNJ baseWitnessTypeNote
βασιλέωςPerseus (tlg0081.tlg001.perseus-grc2:1.28.3)word-variantCandidate (BNJ) τοῦ βασιλέως (Attic gen. sg. of βασιλεύς, -έως); Perseus witness reads βασιλέος (Ionic/uncontracted -έος). Substantive dialectal genitive variant. Codepoints differ only at U+03C9 ω (cand) vs U+03BF ο (wit); all other letters identical.
βασιλεύοντοςPerseus (tlg0081.tlg001.perseus-grc2:1.28.3)word-variantCandidate (BNJ) ἐπὶ τούτου βασιλεύοντος — gen. sg. pres. ptcpl (genitive absolute, agreeing with τούτου). Perseus witness reads βασιλεύοντες — nom. pl. ptcpl. Substantive morphological/syntactic variant (-οντος vs -οντες). Letters identical through βασιλευοντ-; differ at ending ος vs ες.
Substantive stem-vowel variant αι vs ει (the contested vowel precedes the root iota; the word-final iota adscript/subscript is a separate encoding matter, see encoding_diffs). After iota-normalisation the bare-letter stems are μεσογαιω- vs μεσογειω-.
εἷλον,Perseus (tlg0081.tlg001.perseus-grc2:1.28.3)punctuationCandidate (BNJ) has a comma after εἷλον (...Κρότωνα πόλιν ἐν μεσογαίῳ εἷλον, καὶ ἐντεῦθεν...); Perseus witness has no comma (...εἷλον καὶ ἐντεῦθεν...). Word identical (εἷλον); editorial punctuation only.
Witness: Scaife/Perseus. Verdict: CONVERGED (apparatus complete, publishable as BNJ-based).
