Hour 8 — Briefing第八课 — 战前简报

From Hour 7 to Hour 8 — from the Alps to the Atlantic

Hour 7 left Galba's legion trapped in a narrow Alpine valley overnight, mountains thick with hostile Seduni and Veragri. The defense of Octodurus is gripping (DBG 3.3–6) — but it belongs to a future hour. Caesar's third campaigning year (56 BC) opens with a different problem altogether, at the opposite end of Gaul: a maritime federation along the Atlantic coast — the Veneti — has detained Roman officers and revolted, gathering allies as far north as Britain. Land warfare cannot reach them. Their oppida sit on tidal promontories, accessible only at high tide and only by ship; at low tide, attackers cross mud, only to find the sea has carried the defenders away to the next promontory. Caesar orders Decimus Brutus (Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus) to build a fleet on the river Loire, manned by oarsmen drafted from the Province.

The Venetic ships are not Mediterranean galleys. Caesar describes them in 3.13 as ocean-going sailing vessels: oak hulls a foot thick, flat bottoms for shallows, high prow and stern built to take Atlantic seas, no oars, sails of raw leather stretched on yardarms, and rigging made of iron chains. They were, in every meaningful sense, ships from a different ocean. Brutus's Roman fleet — oar-driven, with bronze rams (rōstra) and deck towers (turrēs) — was designed for an Inland Sea.

Section 3.14 is the moment our two fleets meet. About 220 Venetic ships sail out of harbor, fully equipped, facing the Romans. The Roman commanders quickly discover the impossible: the bronze rams cannot pierce oak hulls (rōstrō nocērī nōn posse); the deck-towers, however high, are still lower than the Gallic sterns (altitūdō puppium ex barbarīs nāvibus superābat). Roman javelins fall short or land glancingly. What follows is one of the most elegant counter-engineering decisions in the entire De Bello Gallico: falces praeacūtae — very sharp sickle-blades — affixed to long poles. The Romans hook the ropes that fasten the yardarms to the masts, then pull away at speed under oar. The ropes snap. The yardarms collapse. And since the Gallic ships depend entirely on their sails — they have no oars — the whole fleet is, in a single moment, paralyzed.

Connection to Wheelock. This hour pairs with Wheelock Chapter 8 — Third Conjugation Verbs (present, future, imperfect). After two regular conjugations (1st -āre and 2nd -ēre), the 3rd conjugation introduces verbs with infinitives in -ere (short e) that behave very differently from the 2nd conjugation. The hallmark: the present-stem vowel changes across the paradigm — agō, agis, agit, agimus, agitis, agunt — and the future uses a completely different set of personal endings (-am, -ēs, -et, -ēmus, -ētis, -ent). Caesar's 3.14 is a dense workout in 3rd-conjugation forms: sūmō, capiō, reprimō, statuō, agō, īnsistō, cognōscō, adigō, mittō, accidō, comprehendō, addūcō, praerumpō, abscīdō, concidō, cōnsistō, ēripiō. Almost every finite verb in the passage is 3rd conjugation.

Today's task. Identify all the verbs in the passage and (as the hour's special focus) tag the 3rd-conjugation finite verbs separately. Both halves are colored: indicative red (rule #1), infinitives green (rule #4), and 3rd-decl. nouns continue to carry their ★ from Hour 7.

Source-document note. Hour 8 is composed in the same paradigm as Hours 3–7 — Latin from PerseusDL canonical-latinLit (Holmes 1914), English from McDevitte & Bohn (1869), grammar from Wheelock Ch. 8, with the macron-correct text and vocabulary drawn from the course's source document 8 De Bello Gallico 3.14.docx.

8 De Bello Gallico 3.14.docx

Grammar Target — Third Conjugation Verbs语法目标 — 第三变位法动词

How the 3rd conjugation differs from the 2nd

The 2nd conjugation (Wheelock Ch. 1, e.g. monēre) keeps a long -ē- throughout: moneō, monēs, monet, monēmus, monētis, monent. The 3rd conjugation has an infinitive that looks similar — agere — but with a short e, and its present-stem vowel changes shape across the paradigm. Always check the second principal part: if the infinitive ends in -ere (long ē), it is 2nd conjugation; if it ends in -ere (short e), it is 3rd. The dictionary entry distinguishes them.

agō, agere, ēgī, āctum (3rd conj.) "to do, drive" — present, future, imperfect
PresentFutureImperfect
1 sg.agō "I do"agam "I shall do"agēbam "I was doing"
2 sg.agisagēsagēbās
3 sg.agitagetagēbat
1 pl.agimusagēmusagēbāmus
2 pl.agitisagētisagēbātis
3 pl.aguntagentagēbant

Two warning signs to memorize

  1. Present-stem vowel changes: 1 sg. , 2/3 sg. and 1/2 pl. use a short -i- (agis, agit, agimus, agitis), 3 pl. uses -u- (agunt). Compare 2nd conj. monent with 3rd conj. agunt.
  2. Future is NOT -bō, -bis, -bit: that pattern is 1st/2nd conj. only. 3rd conj. uses the personal endings -am, -ēs, -et, -ēmus, -ētis, -ent — the same shapes as imperfect-subjunctive endings of 1st-conj. verbs! Context disambiguates.

Passive forms in this passage

3.14 is heavy with passive infinitives and indicative passives. Useful reference:

  • nocērī (pres. pass. infin. of noceō) — "to be harmed"
  • adigī (pres. pass. infin. of adigō) — "to be driven home"
  • praerumpēbantur (3 pl. impf. pass. of praerumpō) — "they were being snapped"
  • concidēbant (3 pl. impf. of concidō, intransitive — "they were collapsing")
  • ēriperētur (3 sg. impf. pass. subj. of ēripiō) — "would be snatched away"
Codebook rules carried, no new activation. Hour 8 introduces a major verb chapter (3rd conjugation) but no new tagging color: indicative red (#1), infinitive green (#4), 3rd-decl. ★ (#9, extended in Hour 7) all continue. The Battle Task this hour adds a new secondary toggle — "3rd-conjugation verb only" — so students can isolate the chapter's grammar focus.

Task: identify all verbs (finite + infinitives) AND, in the second pass, identify the 3rd-conjugation finite verbs only. No new codebook color activates this hour — Wheelock Ch. 8 introduces a major verb chapter (3rd conjugation), so the new pedagogical layer is in the Battle Task's mode toggle, not in the passage's color palette.

  1. Rule #1 — Indicative (red). Carried. Indicative verbs this hour: intellēxit, statuit, convēnit, vīsa est, profectae [cōnstitērunt], cōnstitērunt, praeerat, erant attribūtae, cōnstābat, cognōverant, superābat, erat, dēstinābant, erant, praerumpēbantur, concidēbant.
  2. Rule #2 — Subjunctive. Result/indirect-question subjunctives in this passage: agerent (s. 3, deliberative indirect q.) · īnsisterent (s. 3) · possent, acciderent (s. 5, result clause) · cōnsisteret (s. 8) · ēriperētur (s. 9, result clause).
  3. Rule #4 — Infinitive (green). Heavy in s. 1's indirect statement: sūmī, reprimī, nocērī, posse; also exspectandam (gerundive in agreement, technically not an infinitive but functions in the indirect statement); s. 4 repeats nocērī, posse; s. 5 has adigī.
  4. Rule #5 — Participle. Many — most in ablative absolutes (rule #8): expugnātīs, captīs, profectae, missa, praeparāta, īnsertae, adfīxae, comprehēnsī, adductī, incitātō, abscīsīs, ēreptīs, excitātīs. Not clickable in the verb-mode task; some are in abl-abs brackets.
  5. Rule #7 — Noun-adj phrase (underlined). Carried; not focus this hour.
  6. Rule #8 — Abl. abs. [brackets]. Six in this passage: [Complūribus expugnātīs oppidīs] (s. 1), [captīs oppidīs] (s. 1), [turribus excitātīs] (s. 4), [nāvigiō rēmīs incitātō] (s. 7), [Quibus abscīsīs] (s. 8), [hīs ēreptīs] (s. 9). Full rule arrives in Hour 26.
  7. Rule #9 — Noun-case ★ — carried, 3rd-decl. only. 3rd-decl. forms in this hour (★ in the passage): labōrem, hostium, classem, hostibus, nāvēs, genere, classī, tribūnīs, mīlitum, centuriōnibus, ratiōnem, altitūdō, puppium, usuī, falcēs, falcium, fūnēs, spēs, nāvibus, ūsus, nāvium. Note that oppidīs is not starred — oppidum is 2nd declension.

New this hour: the Battle Task's second toggle isolates 3rd-conjugation finite verbs only — the grammatical heart of Wheelock Ch. 8. Targets: intellēxit, statuit, cōnstitērunt, erant attribūtae, agerent, īnsisterent, cognōverant, acciderent, erant (with adductī), praerumpēbantur, concidēbant, cōnsisteret, ēriperētur.

任务:识别所有动词(限定式 + 不定式),并在第二轮单独识别第三变位法的限定动词。本课不引入新的标注颜色,韦洛克第 8 章引入重要的动词章节(第三变位法),所以新的教学层在战斗任务的模式切换中,而非段落配色中。

  1. 规则 #1,直陈式(红色。沿用。
  2. 规则 #2,虚拟式。本段中:agerent, īnsisterent(第 3 句,间接疑问 / 商榷虚拟);possent, acciderent(第 5 句,结果状语从句);cōnsisteret(第 8 句);ēriperētur(第 9 句,结果状语从句)。
本段中加 ★ 的形式:labōrem, hostium, classem, hostibus, nāvēs, genere, classī, tribūnīs, mīlitum, centuriōnibus, ratiōnem, altitūdō, puppium, usuī, falcēs, falcium, fūnēs, spēs, nāvibus, ūsus, nāvium

本课新增:战斗任务的第二个切换专门用于仅识别第三变位法限定动词:这是韦洛克第 8 章的语法核心。识别目标:intellēxit, statuit, cōnstitērunt, erant attribūtae, agerent, īnsisterent, cognōverant, acciderent, erant(与 adductī 连用), praerumpēbantur, concidēbant, cōnsisteret, ēriperētur

Mission — Identify all verbs (incl. infinitives), and all 3rd-conjugation finite verbs任务,识别所有动词(含不定式)与所有第三变位法限定动词

Set the mode, then click words. Click again to deselect. (Words also marked ★ in the passage panel are 3rd-decl. nouns — not part of today's clicking task, just contextual reinforcement.)先选择下方模式,然后点击单词。再次点击可取消选择。(原文段落中带 ★ 的词是三变名词,非本课点击任务,仅作语境提示。)

Hour 8 — Screening第八课 — 影片放映

Following the 20-minute countdown, the instructor announces the answer key, then 5-minute Q&A, then the film clip.20 分钟倒计时结束后,教师宣布答案,再进行 5 分钟问答,然后播放影片片段。

Film clip (proposed):推荐影片片段: Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) — the close-quarters boarding sequence with HMS Surprise alongside the French privateer; the visual scale of yardarms, masts, and ropes is exactly right for picturing the Venetic ships. Alternative: BBC Rome's Greatest Battles "The Battle of the Veneti" reconstruction (rare but excellent — instructor may also have access to the History Channel's 2017 Roman Empire: Reign of Blood Veneti sequence). Drone footage of Quiberon Bay (the modern Bay of Quiberon, southern Brittany) showing the rocky promontories on which the Venetic oppida sat. Subject to instructor confirmation. Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World》(2003)—— HMS Surprise 与法国私掠船舷碰舷的接舷战镜头;桁、桅、绳索的视觉比例正适合想象维内蒂船。备选:BBC《Rome's Greatest Battles》之"维内蒂之战"复原片段(稀见但优秀;教师亦可调用 2017 年 History Channel《Roman Empire: Reign of Blood》中的维内蒂段)。今基伯龙湾(法国南布列塔尼海岸 Bay of Quiberon)无人机航拍,展示维内蒂城邑所据的礁岬。由教师确认。

Source.来源。 The hierarchy of dōna mīlitāria used here follows Valerie A. Maxfield, The Military Decorations of the Roman Army (London: Batsford, 1981) — the standard modern reference. Maxfield documents that corōnae were stratified by feat (mūrālis for first up the wall, navālis for first to board, obsidiōnālis for raising a siege, etc.), while torques, armillae, and phalerae were the routine awards for soldiers and centurions. Maxfield also notes (p. 251) that Caesar himself used promotion as a substitute for decoration — the system this course follows in reverse: decorations for battles, promotion for completing books.Dōna mīlitāria 的等级体系本课程依据 Valerie A. MaxfieldThe Military Decorations of the Roman Army》(London: Batsford, 1981)——该领域之标准现代参考。Maxfield 详述:corōnae 按功勋分级(城墙冠予首登墙者、海军冠予首登敌舰者、解围冠予救援被围之军者,等等);而 torquesarmillaephalerae 为士兵与百夫长之常规奖励。Maxfield 又指出(第 251 页),凯撒本人即以晋升代替勋章:而本课程恰反其道而行:勋章授与战役,晋升保留给读完一卷。
