Hour 16 — Briefing第十六课 — 战前简报

Tacitus continues — political disunity, climate, resources

Hour 15 stopped at the three-part theory of British physical types. Hour 16 picks up immediately, with Agricola chapters 12–13. Tacitus's ethnographic logic now moves from physiology (Hour 15 — bodies and origins) to character and politics (Ch. 12 — military behavior, political fragmentation, climate) and then to resources (Ch. 13 — soil, grain, gold, silver, pearls). Each section ends with a sentence that — embedded though it is in an ethnographic genre — reads as commentary on Roman imperialism itself.

Three moments deserve emphasis. (1) Sentence 5 of our passage — Tacitus's most quoted line on Britain: "singulī pugnant, ūniversī vincuntur" — "they fight individually, and they are conquered universally." This is Tacitus's diagnosis of British political fragmentation as the Romans' single greatest tactical advantage. The same sentence applies, with no change of vocabulary, to most of the peoples Caesar fought in the De Bello Gallico. Tacitus has found the formula. (2) Sentences 6–8 describe Britain's climate as wet and foggy but lacking sharp cold — and add the famous detail that at midsummer, in extreme Britain, you can see the gleam of the sun pass under the horizon without setting. This is direct observation by Agricola's fleet (Hour 15's circumnavigation), and as far north as Roman testimony ever reaches before late antiquity. (3) Sentences 9–11 catalog Britain's natural resources: grain "ripens slowly, sprouts quickly"; gold, silver, "other metals"; and pearls — but defective pearls. Tacitus's closing line on the pearls — "facilius crediderim nātūram margaritīs deesse quam nōbīs avāritiam" ("I should sooner believe that the pearls themselves are lacking than that we are lacking in greed") — is one of the most stinging asides in Latin prose.

Connection to Wheelock. This hour pairs with Wheelock Chapter 16 — Adjectives of the Third Declension. We've been seeing these all along (omnis, gravis, fortis, brevis, fēlīx, vetus, recēns), but Wheelock now formally codifies them. Three sub-patterns: (1) Three-termination — separate masc., fem., neut. nominative singular forms: ācer, ācris, ācre; (2) Two-termination (the most common) — masc./fem. share one form, neut. has another: omnis, omne; (3) One-termination — all three genders share the same nominative singular form: fēlīx, fēlīcis (the genitive then reveals the stem). Most 3rd-decl. adjectives are i-stems with -ī in ablative singular and -ium in genitive plural — a continuation of Hour 14's i-stem pattern but for adjectives.

Today's task. Identify all the verbs in the passage AND identify all 3rd-declension adjective forms — the chapter's grammar focus. Tacitus uses them at every joint of the syntax: commūne, omnēs, gravis, brevis, fēcundus (1st/2nd, but worth noting for contrast), levēs, breve, etc.

Source-document note. Latin from Tacitus, De Vita Iulii Agricolae 12–13, edited from PerseusDL canonical-latinLit corpus (phi1351), with light morphological smoothing. English: Church & Brodribb (1877), adapted.

Grammar Target — 3rd-Declension Adjectives (Type 2)语法目标 — 第三变格法形容词

Three sub-types of 3rd-declension adjective

3rd-decl. adjectives are classified by how many distinct nominative singular forms they have:

TypePatternExample (nom. sg.)
Three-terminationmasc., fem., neut. all differentācer, ācris, ācre
Two-termination (most common)masc./fem. share; neut. differentomnis, omne
One-terminationall three share the same nom. sg.fēlīx (gen. fēlīcis)

All three sub-types decline identically in the oblique cases. They are almost always i-stems: ablative singular -ī, genitive plural -ium, neuter nom./acc. plural -ia.

Paradigm — omnis, omne (two-termination)

omnis, omne "all, every"
Masc./Fem.Neut.
Sg. Nom.omnisomne
Gen.omnis (both)
Dat.omnī (both)
Acc.omnemomne
Abl.omnīnote long ī (vs. consonant-stem -e)
Pl. Nom.omnēsomnia
Gen.omniumi-stem marker
Dat./Abl.omnibus
Acc.omnēs (-īs)omnia

Paradigm — ācer, ācris, ācre (three-termination)

ācer, ācris, ācre "sharp, keen, fierce"
Masc.Fem.Neut.
Sg. Nom.ācerācrisācre
Gen.ācris
Dat.ācrī
Acc.ācremācremācre
Abl.ācrī
Pl. Nom.ācrēsācria
Gen.ācrium
Dat./Abl.ācribus
Acc.ācrēsācria

Paradigm — fēlīx (one-termination)

fēlīx, fēlīcis "happy, lucky"
Masc./Fem.Neut.
Sg. Nom.fēlīxfēlīx
Gen.fēlīcis
Dat.fēlīcī
Acc.fēlīcemfēlīx
Abl.fēlīcī
Pl. Nom.fēlīcēsfēlīcia
Gen.fēlīcium
Dat./Abl.fēlīcibus
Acc.fēlīcēsfēlīcia

Three warning signs to memorize

  1. Abl. sg. is -ī, not -e. This is the most common confusion with 3rd-decl. nouns (where consonant-stem nouns have -e: rēge). Adjectives almost universally take -ī. cum fortī mīlite, not cum forte.
  2. Neut. nom./acc. pl. is -ia, not -a. Once again the i-stem mark. omnia, gravia, brevia — not omna.
  3. One-termination adjectives REQUIRE you to memorize the genitive. fēlīx alone tells you nothing; fēlīx, fēlīcis reveals stem fēlīc-. Same for vetus, veteris; recēns, recentis; compos, compotis; ingēns, ingentis.

3rd-decl. adjectives in our passage

The Tacitus excerpt has rich 3rd-decl. adjective traffic. Spot the type:

  • commūne (s. 5) — 2-termination (commūnis, commūne)
  • omnēs / omnia — 2-termination (omnis, omne) — appears repeatedly
  • gravis, brevis, levēs — 2-termination
  • vetus (when it appears: veterum, etc.) — 1-termination
  • fēcundus, fēcunda, fēcundum — actually 1st/2nd-decl., NOT 3rd-decl. (Tacitus's stylistic flexibility)
  • māior, māius (comparative) — 1-termination (special comparative pattern)
Codebook rules carried. The Battle Task adds a secondary toggle — "3rd-decl. adjective form" — to isolate the chapter's grammar focus.

第三变格法形容词的三个子类

第三变格法形容词按主格单数形态数目分为三类:

类别形式例(主格单数)
三性词尾阳、阴、中各异ācer, ācris, ācre
双性词尾(最常见)阳/阴共一形;中性另一形omnis, omne
单性词尾三性共同一主格单数fēlīx(属格 fēlīcis)

三类在斜格变化中相同。它们几乎都是 i-词干:夺格单数 -ī,属格复数 -ium,中性主/宾格复数 -ia。

范式,omnis, omne(双性词尾)

omnis, omne"全部、每一"
阳/阴
omnisomne
omnis(两性同)
omnī(两性同)
omnemomne
omnī注意长 ī(区别于辅音干名词 -e)
omnēsomnia
omniumi-词干标志
与/夺omnibus
omnēs (-īs)omnia

范式,ācer, ācris, ācre(三性词尾)

ācer, ācris, ācre"锐利、激烈、勇猛"
ācerācrisācre
ācris
ācrī
ācremācremācre
ācrī
ācrēsācria
ācrium
与/夺ācribus
ācrēsācria

范式,fēlīx(单性词尾)

fēlīx, fēlīcis"幸运的"
阳/阴
fēlīxfēlīx
fēlīcis
fēlīcī
fēlīcemfēlīx
fēlīcī
fēlīcēsfēlīcia
fēlīcium
与/夺fēlīcibus
fēlīcēsfēlīcia

  • vetus(若出现:veterum 等)——单性词尾
  • fēcundus, fēcunda, fēcundum,其实是第一/第二变格法,第三(注意塔西陀风格的灵活)
  • māior, māius(比较级)——单性词尾(比较级特别范式)
沿用旧规则。战斗任务新增副切换:"第三变格法形容词形式"——以隔离本章语法焦点。

Hour 16 — Battle Task第十六课 — 战斗任务

The instructor will only give the question paper to the players / let the players turn to the online question page right before the 20-minute countdown starts. 教师将在 20 分钟倒计时开始之前才向学生发放试题 / 开放在线试题页面。

Tagging rules in effect this Hour本课生效的标注规则

Task: identify all verbs (finite + infinitives) AND identify all 3rd-declension adjective forms — comparatives count (they are typically 1-termination), and so do indeclinable comparatives like plūs.

  1. Rule #1 — Indicative. Carried.
  2. Rule #2 — Subjunctive. ēmollierit (s. 1, ut-clause); internōscās (s. 7, ut-clause); officiant (s. 8, sī-clause); arbitrantur, crēdiderim (s. 12 — note crēdiderim is potential subjunctive).
  3. Rule #4 — Infinitive. flōruisse (s. 2); abesse (s. 5/12, both contexts); aspicī, occidere, exsurgere, trānsīre (s. 8, indir. statement after adfirmant); orīrī (s. 9, dep.); dēesse (s. 12).
  4. Rule #5 — Participle. āmissā (s. 2, abl. abs.); patiēns (s. 9, pres. act. part. used adjectivally); līventia (s. 11, pres. act. part. used as adjective).
  5. Rule #7 — Noun-adj phrase. Carried.
  6. Rule #8 — Abl. abs. [āmissā virtūte pariter ac lībertāte] (s. 2).
  7. Rule #9 — Noun-case ★ — 3rd-decl. only. Carried.

New this hour: the Battle Task's second toggle isolates 3rd-declension adjective forms — Wheelock-Ch.16 grammar focus. Targets in this passage: plūs (s. 1, indecl. comp.); honestior (s. 3, comp. 1-term.); ūtilius (s. 5, comp. 1-term.); commūne (s. 5, 2-term., first occurrence); commūne (s. 5, 2-term., second occurrence); brevis (s. 7, 2-term.); calidiōribus (s. 9, comp. 1-term., abl. p.); patiēns (s. 9, 1-term. used adjectivally); līventia (s. 11, 1-term. used adjectivally, neut. pl.); facilius (s. 12, comp. adv. from facilis, 3rd-decl.). 10 targets.

任务:识别所有动词(限定式 + 不定式),并识别所有第三变格法形容词形式:比较级也算(多为单性词尾),不变化比较级(如 plūs)亦在其中。

  1. 规则 #1,直陈式。沿用。
  2. 规则 #2,虚拟式ēmollierit, internōscās, officiant, arbitrantur, crēdiderim

1 Plūs tamen ferōciae Britannī praeferunt, ut quōs nondum longa pāx ēmollierit. 2 Nam Gallōs quoque in bellīs flōruisse accēpimus; mox sēgnitia cum ōtiō intrāvit, [āmissā virtūte pariter ac lībertāte]. 3 In pedite rōbur; quaedam nātiōnēs et currū proeliantur. Hour 16 — Screening第十六课 — 影片放映

Following the 20-minute countdown, the instructor announces the answer key, then 5-minute Q&A, then the film clip.20 分钟倒计时结束后,教师宣布答案,再进行 5 分钟问答,然后播放影片片段。

Film clip (proposed):推荐影片片段: For the climate: documentary footage of British weather (the BBC's Britain's Weather: A History, 2018) — Tacitus's "wet, foggy, no sharp cold" is visually self-evident. For political disunity ("singulī pugnant, ūniversī vincuntur"): any documentary on the collapse of the Celtic League against Caesar (e.g. BBC's Druids, 2003) or — more provocatively — modern political-fragmentation analyses (Adam Curtis's HyperNormalisation, 2016) for a contemporary echo. For midsummer light at British latitudes: timelapse of midsummer twilight at Shetland (60.7°N) — Tacitus's claim that "you might distinguish the end and beginning of daylight by a slight interval" is verified almost literally. Subject to instructor confirmation.

Source.来源。 The hierarchy of dōna mīlitāria used here follows Valerie A. Maxfield, The Military Decorations of the Roman Army (London: Batsford, 1981) — the standard modern reference. Maxfield documents that corōnae were stratified by feat (mūrālis for first up the wall, navālis for first to board, obsidiōnālis for raising a siege, etc.), while torques, armillae, and phalerae were the routine awards for soldiers and centurions. Maxfield also notes (p. 251) that Caesar himself used promotion as a substitute for decoration — the system this course follows in reverse: decorations for battles, promotion for completing books.Dōna mīlitāria 的等级体系本课程依据 Valerie A. MaxfieldThe Military Decorations of the Roman Army》(London: Batsford, 1981)——该领域之标准现代参考。Maxfield 详述:corōnae 按功勋分级(城墙冠予首登墙者、海军冠予首登敌舰者、解围冠予救援被围之军者,等等);而 torquesarmillaephalerae 为士兵与百夫长之常规奖励。Maxfield 又指出(第 251 页),凯撒本人即以晋升代替勋章:而本课程恰反其道而行:勋章授与战役,晋升保留给读完一卷。
